For several years now – before the Corona virus -- President Trump aggressively sought to turn the USA’s economy around. And it did turn around. Jobs were plentiful at record numbers. Employers in fact couldn’t find enough workers. That’s how much work there was. Unemployment rate dropped to all-time lows for every category – whites, blacks, Hispanics, women – they all had record low unemployment rates. Companies that had left the USA were coming back home. The stock market certainly soared. In fact, the economy had never been so good. People’s incomes were going up, up, up.
President Trump certainly was very pleased with the results of his work and openly said so and took credit for almost all of it.
But all that was before the China Wuhan virus hit the whole world. Then literally overnight, the economies of most of the world and certainly here in the USA – tanked – as nations spiraled down into lockdown, businesses were shut down, travel almost stopped, commerce went into a tailspin. And how the USA suffered started affecting the whole world.
What happened? Why did it happen?
Yes, certainly most would readily say that the Corona Covid19 virus was a chief cause of the worldwide meltdown. Then add to that the worldwide protests in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing and the wanton destruction of property and attacks on the police forces of America that ensued. Anarchy has followed. Police Department budgets were slashed in numerous cities in one of the most stupid acts I’ve ever seen. More economic impact came from that as well. And now we also have to wonder how safe our country will be with hundreds of police officers retiring early, being laid off, quitting, or finding other work. Why put your life on the line for a city whose leaders don’t have your back?
But was it more than that? Certainly personally for President Trump, could it have been more than just being dealt a bad hand of cards and bad luck and killer virus from China?

One thing was very evident before the virus hit. The USA was on a roll. President Trump was on a roll. Everything looked wonderful – or at least everything seemed to be looking better.
One thing that I couldn’t help notice in the first 3 years of the Trump presidency – and it bothered me greatly – is that President Trump always took personal credit for almost everything he was connected to. He rarely shared the glory with others, though he got slowly better at doing that.
** Trump took credit for the booming economy. He said he was responsible for an economy like no one’s ever seen before! The stock market kept hitting new record highs. Trump took credit for that too.
** The President took credit for standing up to China, Russia, Iran and North Korea and imposing sanctions.
** He took credit for putting Iran on notice that America would not allow their nuclear development, which more than likely would have ended up with nuclear atomic bombs and missiles in a few short years.
** President Trump took credit for making NATO members pay more of their fair share for the defense of Europe.
I could go on and on, but you get my point. President TRUMP routinely and proudly proclaimed that HE was totally responsible for all the great things that happened in his first 3 years.
And he told us to just imagine how much more he could have achieved had he not been the target of the bogus attacks on him which claimed he was basically a Russian stooge, colluding with them and doing their bidding. Some of you still believe that, though after all that time and money spent trying to prove how treasonous our President was supposed to be, The Mueller Report produced nothing to show Trump was colluding with the Russians to undermine our country or our elections.
And he never, to my recollection, ever said anything like, “Folks, we’re all working hard to rebuild our economy, but frankly we are where we are because of Almighty God’s blessings. HE is to be praised. HE blessed our nation. HE opened doors and shut doors. Let’s praise God in heaven for what he’s been blessing us with.”
Well, there was another leader, Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled over the great Babylonian empire. He probably would have some great advice for President Trump. Nebuchadnezzar was a great builder. The fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon must have been a sight to behold. His army conquered much of the known world. His wealth was legendary; his power unrivaled.
And that emperor also took a lot of credit for the growth of Babylon. Now keep in mind, Almighty God is clear in His Word (the Bible) that he hates pride, vanity and pomposity. See Proverbs 6:16-19. Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Almighty (Prov 16:5). God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5). Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall (Prov. 16:18).
So God just hates it when someone takes all the credit and is overwhelmingly proud of his/her accomplishments – or who takes credit for something that was truly a group effort.
So what was Nebuchadnezzar’s story?
Daniel 4:28-35
All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of the twelve months he was walking about the royal palace of Babylon. 30 The king spoke, saying, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?"
31 While the word was still in the king's mouth, a voice fell from heaven: "King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! 32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomever He chooses."
33 That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles' feathers and his nails like birds' claws.
34 And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever…”
President Trump: many of us respect what you’ve tried to do and see the good things you’ve helped bring about. But we also hear your rude tongue and listen and watch your pride and proud language. God let you have a good thing going in your first three years.
But now almost everything you were once so proud of, that you claimed responsibility for -- is crumbling beneath the weight of the worldwide pandemic and the subsequent collapse of so many things we know and love. And now you blame China for it all. Maybe rightly so, but all the things you recently were so proud of – well, are gone now, or on the way out.
Mr. President, just saying. Could God be trying to get YOUR attention? Could God be trying to bring you to repentance and humility? Could the Almighty – that’s God I mean – be wanting a closer walk with you, but he’s repelled by pride.
And if you do respond the right way in deep repentance of your pride and wrong actions, I really believe you just might see God bless you and our nation again. You can lead the nation in seeking after the living God. You can inspire people to pray, to seek God, to each one of us remove evil from our own lives first of all - - then we can look at the cities. Mr. President, a lot rides on your shoulders and how you lead this nation toward God – or not.
Mr. President, you were not the one who brought all these blessings on the country. God used you perhaps, but ultimately all blessings ultimately come from God above. When you acknowledge all this, the remainder of your story and legacy can be dramatically better than where it’s all heading right now.
It’s up to you, Mr. President. Are you going to learn from King Nebuchadnezzar -- or will you insist on making the same mistakes HE made – and reaping the same humiliation?
Speak to America. Admit your shortcomings and how YOU need to start turning to God as never before. Genuinely pick up a good Bible and start reading it every day. But you have to mean all this from your heart of hearts. Speak to the group meeting on Sept 26 this year at “the Return” to God movement on the National Mall in Washington DC. Continue to do all you can to help people seek God. Even the Apostle Paul told the pagan Greeks that if they really sought the true living God, they would find him, for “he is not far from each of us” (Acts 17:27-28).
Lead us THAT way, Mr. President. Enough of the nation will follow you -- to allow the Living God to heal our land and bless our nation again.
Read 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 where it mentions the plague/pestilence – and what the remedy is. If God’s people will humble themselves and pray and seek the true God and each of us turn from our wicked ways, he promises to hear from heaven and heal our land.
Oh how we need that. Lead us in this direction, Mr. President. Humble yourself FIRST and pray – and then lead us that way. And if you do, you will be re-elected, and our economy and power will rebound for a time. But if you don’t, “all bets are off” – but God will do what God wants in the leaders of men.
There it is, Mr. President. There it is. Seek God and you will find him – and then lead the nation in seeking God. Like Solomon, admit you need his help and ask for wisdom and understanding – and bit extra serving of his grace to be extended to you and to our nation.
We’re watching, Mr. President. But more importantly, God is watching.
